A conversation with Pooja Subramanian from Rainbow Youth

Pooja Subramanian (She/Her, They/Them) is the Executive Director of RainbowYOUTH.  Rainbow Youth is a non profit organisation that provides support, groups, info and resources for queer, gender diverse, takatāpui and intersex youth, their friends, whānau and communities. We talked to Pooja about their favourite food and what they envision for the future of Aotearoa.

Kia ora Pooja, how are you doing?
I’m doing great! I’m sure you’ve heard the news about Chris Parker winning Celebrity Treasure Island for us- so I’m currently on cloud nine!

What is your go-to karaoke song?

Mariah Carey - Hero.

If you could only have one dish for the rest of your life what would it be?

Pizza!!

Where is your favourite place in New Zealand and why?

I can’t think of a particular place, everywhere in Aotearoa is beautiful, I’m very lucky to be able to live here.

How can individuals and businesses show better allyship to the queer community?

Unlearning and learning is the best way to work on showing your allyship to our communities. Find out information that’s helpful for you. Remember that it’s a journey, not a destination.

What do you love the most about your job?

The incredible staff team, hands down!

What are you working on at Rainbow Youth  at the moment?

Currently, I’m working on making sure we’re prepared for whatever this pandemic brings us, and making sure that our staff, volunteers and young people can reach out to us for help and be safe at the same time.

What is something you admire about the future generations?

Their ability to dream, and be staunch in what they want their future to look like.

What do you envision for the future of Aotearoa?

A future where all young people are thriving, not just surviving.

Naked Accounting Testimonial

Working with NA has been an absolute dream over the last few months, particularly with the challenges that the pandemic has brought forward. We’re stoked to have the help of a company that understands the NFP sector, and shares our vision at the same time!
